Overview of Rain Water Harvesting – Architectural, Engineering & Design services Consultancy Firm – India

What, Why & How of Rain Water Harvesting (RWH)?

Let us first think of why this term has been coined? It’s obvious that due to various human interventions we have somehow managed successfully to break the ecological and hydrological cycle present in nature and thus have to find out ways to supplement it. Rain water harvesting is one of the subset to this solution. In layman terms, rain water harvesting is nothing but making right use of the rain water in direct or indirect ways. It can be done by recharging groundwater levels through injection wells, storing it in lime plastered masonry or concrete tanks for further domestic use, creating artificial reservoirs by collecting rain water from vast area channelled through efficient storm water networks.

Major benefit of implementing RWH system is that you’re not stuck with one water source and even enhances the storm water management at your door and get away from the risk of flooding.

Widely used RWH system in present days

First and foremost step for planning RWH system is conducting hydrogeological survey. It is supplemented by geophysical survey to ascertain water-bearing zones of shallow, deep aquifers and salinity levels which helps to understand subsurface geology and feasibility at various locations by identifying the zones which are favorable for planning of artificial recharge structures. Out of all geophysical surveys, electrical resistivity method is the best and reliable for ground water prospecting and is principally based on the study of resistance offered by sub-surface formation to the flow of current. There will be appreciable concentration of current in places where there are large masses of highly conductive bodies. Based on the results, the depth of the injection well can be identified. In addition to that, the hydraulic conductivity i.e. recharge capacity can be obtained by on-site aquifer pumping test conducted on test bore.

Further, boring is done up to required depth and casing pipe is lowered. Perforated casing pipe is placed in area identified with fractures i.e. zones where recharge can be possible and in rest, blank casing pipe is placed. After lowering the casing pipe, a well is created up to 3-5 meter depth with all filter media present surrounding it. Filter media consist of layers of gravels, coarse sand, charcoal & activated carbon which helps to purify water before it gets recharged. In addition to that, a dual “V-wire screen” is provided at bottom of the well surrounding the casing pipe. This screen gives inwardly widening V-shape slots. The shape does not give space for any sand particle to get stuck inside the slot and hence these screens are non-clogging.

Such injection wells can be planned in line with storm water drain network, inside the artificial water retaining structure (e.g. pond) or independently in a landscape area with slope toward the injection well.

Regulations in Gujarat for RWH:

Under the Gujarat Development Control Regulations, buildings with area between 500 and 1500 sq. meters, the owner or developer shall have to undertake Rainwater Harvesting as per the Authority Specifications. For buildings with area between 1500 to 4000 sq. meters, owner/developer has to provide percolation wells with rain water harvesting system at one percolating well for every 4000 sq. meters or part thereof of building unit. The state Roads and Buildings Department has made rainwater harvesting mandatory for all government buildings.

LIGHTNING PROTECTION SYSTEM

Lightning Protection System – Need of a Building – Architectural, Engineering & Design services Consultancy Firm – India

Lightning is one of the common weather phenomena. At any instance, lightning strikes the earth around 100 times per second. This only accounts Cloud to Ground lightning strokes which is one of the common form of lightning. As per the data by Indian Institute of Tropical Meteorology (IITM), there were almost 41000 Cloud to ground lightning strikes recorded all over India on April 16, 2019. Over the past decade, lightning strike accounted for approximately 2000 deaths every year throughout India. Significantly, this numbers are increasing day by day due to changes in atmospheric cycle of an Earth resulted by industrialization, Global warming etc.

For an industry, Lightning strike may cause damage to 3M – Man (Human), Material and Machines. Neglecting effects of lightning may create electrocution to people, damage to Building structure and stoppage of process/production and thereafter revenue of an industry. The purpose of lightning protection system (LPS) is to protect buildings (Industrial, Commercial and Residential etc.) from direct lightning strikes and its consequence effects. For any building, Special directives by National building Code (NBC) must be implemented to protect building from direct lightning. As per IS 62305 – Part 2, Risk assessment study to be done for the building and lightning protection level to be decided.

Risk assessment study considers following criteria to decide probability of occurring lightning on the building and its consequence effects,

  • Use of Structure (House, Factory, School, Hospital etc.)
  • Type of construction
  • Material / process vulnerable to fire
  • Degree of isolation of building from nearby structures
  • Location of Building (To decide lightning strike density – No. of Thunderstorm/Km3 / Year)

IS 2309: 2010 defines acceptable limit for probable no. of lightning strikes on building per year (P) is 1 in 100000. After completion of Risk assessment study,

  • If P ≥ 1, LPS should be considered for building.
  • If P < 1, implementation of LPS is not necessary.

For special case, if consequence effect of lightning is very negligible and slightly damage the building, it may be economical to not opt for protection and go for the risk.

To design lightning protection system, Designer should have proper understanding of building, its Usage, density of lightning strike and consequence effect. Proper consultation should be done by Designer with Architect, Public Utilities, Fire/Safety officer, Radio installer and contractor to ensure effective design and installation of Lightning protection system.

We @ VMS, design lightning protection system considering criteria provided by IEC 62305 (IS 2309) and guidelines by National Building code-2016. Faradays’ cage method, Angle protection method and Rolling sphere method is being suggested to valued customer for protection of an Industrial building against direct Lightning strike. As per the guidelines by NBC-2016, Radio-active system / Dissipation system / Early Streamer Emission type Lightning Protection System is not accepted and not recommended by VMS as well.

INDUSTRIAL ARCHITECTURE

INDUSTRIAL ARCHITECTURE – Architectural, Engineering & Design services Consultancy Firm – India

(A) GLOBAL CONCERN

In the changing definition of development and realization of the effect of human interventions with the natures balancing co-existence, the word development itself has been brought under scanner due to man’s inability to handle the concept of development in the right context and spirit. Instead of development being associated with the progressive side of the future, it is becoming synonymous with destructive aspects.

Now-a-days a new vocabulary has emerged to convey progressive ‘Sustainable development’, the development which can sustain itself for long and can co-exist with the natural ecosystem without bringing major damage.

Development is associated mainly with the evolving comfort levels of mankind. Today’s modern man has come a long way from the caveman in enjoying these comforts in different walks of life. The comforts which were being enjoyed by very few selective have now penetrated down to the commonest of the common man.

This is made possible by fast growing scientific achievements, emerging technologies and mass production. After the industrial revolution, this phenomena has taken such a pace, man himself is unable to cope with its effects.

Man has brought himself to a situation in which he has become a slave of material dependency. A situation which he is surrounded by, it is difficult for him to come out even after hearing the alarming bells of his own existence.

(B) ROLE OF ARCHITECTURE

With the foregoing background, we need to move forward irrespective of the emerging dilemma of development v/s conservation. Architecture has a big role to play as one of the leading participant of construction activity. Architecture has been giving expression to built forms since ages in different context and end use with the help of available resources and technology. History tells us the story of Architecture for creating volumes for different purposes, interplay of these volumes and external manifestations of these volumes in the natural and man made surroundings.

Architecture has undergone tremendous change in expressing these built forms starting with the use of massive construction to create very small usable volumes to create large volumes doing minimum construction.

This is made possible with exploring different materials, understanding their behavior and optimizing their use to the fullest. Historically, man has used his creativity for making his habitat, places of power and defense, places of worship, entertainment and civic amenities, etc.

(C) INDUSTRIAL ARCHITECTURE ON A CRITICAL PATH OF EVALUATION

Creating volumes for Industries, their machines and process of manufacturing the man made products started with the onset of Industrial revolution. For Architects and people of other disciplines involved in the construction of these building, it was relatively a new experience creating volumes for different types of Industries. With the influx of new materials of construction, the expression of the industrial buildings are also changing very fast like other type of buildings.

As it is true for any other type of buildings, for Industrial buildings also, the external expression is a result of interplay of volumes created for the function, facilities required to carry out these functions, the materials used to achieve the result and prevailing technologies of the period.

The issues pertaining to the Industrial buildings differ from that of other type of buildings in which human being remain in focus for addressing various requirements. Where as in Industrial buildings, the focus is on the process for manufacturing, machines required for the ease of the process, the equipment and systems used for the movement of raw materials, product in process and finished goods, the stacking and storage of these materials in different stages, the utilities required for the different stages of process, etc. In case of some sensitive industries like pharma or food products, issues of quality of air, hygienic conditions play a major role in creating indoor volumes. Most important of the related issue is treatment and disposal of effluents produced due to the process of production which are becoming serious threats to existence of the earth.

Industrial Architecture is not only creating external facades and external manifestations of functional volumes but also addressing above related issues and evolving a building which is appropriate to the particular Industry type. In many cases the elements of expression are process vessels, utility supply network, storage silos, cooling towers, etc.

In the fast changing world, Industries have become integral part of human existence and symbol of development but huge efforts are required for industries to become part of sustainable development.

(D) APPROACH AT VMS

Looking at the present scenario, it is becoming crystal clear that sincere efforts will be required at different levels starting from policy making at Global and National level that can reverse the situation to commitment at individual industry level for acknowledgement of their role as responsible participant.

Only brighter side is the awareness though it has come very late and after paying a heavy price. What is also lacking is the implementation of the corrective measures in the right direction. VMS is involved in the Industrial design for many years and have fully realized our role as Industrial Consultant in acting as a link between global policies of corrective measures and implementation by individual Industries, expanding our role from mere technical adviser. Most important of many approaches is to educate the industrial clientele, encourage and persuade them to adopt relevant applicable norms and advise them on line of action for implementation.

Introduce Yourself (Example Post)

This is an example post, originally published as part of Blogging University. Enroll in one of our ten programs, and start your blog right.

You’re going to publish a post today. Don’t worry about how your blog looks. Don’t worry if you haven’t given it a name yet, or you’re feeling overwhelmed. Just click the “New Post” button, and tell us why you’re here.

Why do this?

  • Because it gives new readers context. What are you about? Why should they read your blog?
  • Because it will help you focus you own ideas about your blog and what you’d like to do with it.

The post can be short or long, a personal intro to your life or a bloggy mission statement, a manifesto for the future or a simple outline of your the types of things you hope to publish.

To help you get started, here are a few questions:

  • Why are you blogging publicly, rather than keeping a personal journal?
  • What topics do you think you’ll write about?
  • Who would you love to connect with via your blog?
  • If you blog successfully throughout the next year, what would you hope to have accomplished?

You’re not locked into any of this; one of the wonderful things about blogs is how they constantly evolve as we learn, grow, and interact with one another — but it’s good to know where and why you started, and articulating your goals may just give you a few other post ideas.

Can’t think how to get started? Just write the first thing that pops into your head. Anne Lamott, author of a book on writing we love, says that you need to give yourself permission to write a “crappy first draft”. Anne makes a great point — just start writing, and worry about editing it later.

When you’re ready to publish, give your post three to five tags that describe your blog’s focus — writing, photography, fiction, parenting, food, cars, movies, sports, whatever. These tags will help others who care about your topics find you in the Reader. Make sure one of the tags is “zerotohero,” so other new bloggers can find you, too.
